Sleaford's Town Mayor - Councillor George Grout

I was born in Rugby and moved to Peterborough where I was an apprentice sheet metal worker at W Pinder and Sons. My wife Alice and I married in 1960 and we have 3 daughters. We moved from Peterborough to Billingborough in Lincolnshire in 1973 to set up an engineering business with a colleague. We relocated the business to Aslackby where I was a director, however maintaining a shop floor role in the business, personally fabricating vibrating machinery for the scrap metal industry, waste recycling, mining and food industry. I have spent all my working life in engineering retiring in 2001.

All my daughters were educated at Kesteven and Sleaford High School for girls. We relocated to Quarrington, Sleaford in 1990 and our daughters and their families live in Sleaford where we have 6 grandchildren with 5 attending the local schools.

For many years I was closely involved in Scouting and was a leader and Group Scout leader for many years. My interests now are centred around my family and I enjoy walking regularly. I Clay shoot and have recently introduced my grandsons to the sport. I previously belonged to the Ramblers association and am now Chairman of the Friends of Mareham Pastures Nature Reserve in Sleaford and Chairman of Sleaford Gardeners Society.

I was elected to Sleaford Town Council representing Mareham Ward in 2003 and was re-elected again in 2007. I have served on various committees within the town council and have chaired the General Purposes committee. My particular interests as a Councillor have been the maintenance of public footpaths and reduction of litter in town however all of the issues that affect the people of Sleaford are my concern.

I have served as Deputy Mayor 2007-2008 and now am honoured to be elected Sleaford's Town Mayor for 2008-2009. As Deputy I have endeavoured to serve the community honourably and will continue to do so with the full support of the Town Council in my capacity as elected Mayor.

As Mayor my chosen charities will be Macmillan Cancer Support, Salvation Army and Headway (the Brain Injury Association).
