Political profile:
Douglas Hogg is the son of former Lord Chancellor Lord Hailsham,
is a former president of the Oxford Union and entered the Commons
in 1979 at the beginning of 18 years of Conservative rule.
His wife was awarded a peerage in 1995 after heading
the Downing Street Policy Unit for John Major.
He himself became a government minister in 1986
and joined the Cabinet in 1995.
Despite this lineage, he was returned to the back
benches in 1997 after being minister for agriculture at the height
of the BSE crisis.
Since leaving the frontbench, he has continued his
career as a barrister but still pops up to blast vitriol at Labour.
He has always been on the soft-left of the Conservative
Party and has in the past supported modest constitutional reform.
