Why have an allotment?

There are a number of reasons to have an allotment:

fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers all year round
if chickens are kept there are fresh eggs
gardening is good exercise

Having an allotment is also a good way to make friends and learn gardening skills.  Sheds are allowed and fresh water is provided.

Where are the allotments?

There are two sites:

The Drove - Go to the bottom of The Drove, bear right at the end and the allotments are just over the railway bridge.
Galley Hill - accessed off Millfield Terrace, entrance halfway down on the left, there is also a pedestrian entrance off Tennyson Avenue.

How much is a plot?

The cost is £40 per plot and £20 per half plot.  Bills are sent out in January for the coming year (1st April - 31st March).

Applying for an allotment.

To apply for an allotment call 01529 303456 or email enquiries@sleaford.gov.uk.  There is usually a waiting list for The Drove site.  An agreement will need to be signed before a plot is taken on.  To read the terms and conditions click on the following link:

Bonfires

Bonfires can be used for waste that cannot be composted, but in such a way which does not create a nuisance for other people.

It is always preferable to compost as much allotment waste as possible, it is environmentally friendly and will provide you with free compost.  We appreciate that you may have allotment waste that is non-compostable and therefore need to have a small bonfire.  In this case then we ask you to remember the following:

Burning is NOT environmentally friendly, is harmful to health and can be annoying to neighbours.  If you continually cause a nuisance with burning you may be prosecuted by Environmental Health.

Light your bonfire after 9 am.
Ensure that the ground and the items to be burnt are dry in order to avoid the fire smoking.
Always have a hot, quick fire.
Be considerate to neighbours; don't have a fire when wind is blowing towards neighbouring houses.
Always extinguish the fire at least 2 hours before sunset.
NEVER leave your fire unattended.
Never leave the allotment site without ensuring that the fire has been properly extinguished.
REMEMBER IT IS ILLEGAL TO DUMP ALLOTMENT WASTE AND HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH ON ALLOTMENT SITES.
